Netflix dropped a documentary recently which highlights a dystopian existence, not a Black Mirror episode, nor a peek into a possible bleak future, but a devastating look at how social media and other large tech companies are manipulating our thoughts and behaviors today through our addictions to their dopamine driven products.

While this may not be news to readers of this blog, the material is well packaged making it an interesting watch for anyone and also a great introduction to share with friends and family about the dangers that the data mined by social media companies presents to the well-being of individuals and society at large.

The Social Dilemma includes interviews with former employees of some of Silicon Valley’s largest social media and tech companies, including Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Google. Also featured is Shoshana Zuboff who wrote the book ‘The Age of Surveillance Capitalism: The Fight for a Human Future at the New Frontier of Power‘.

We honestly couldn’t have asked for a better introduction to highlight the need for owning your data and more holistically owning your digital life. ‘Own Your Digital Life‘ was recently adopted by the SOCIETY2 team as a mantra which encapsulates a capability we aim to deliver to individuals with decentralized social media.
